Trump travels to Paris for the reopening of Notre Dame, meeting with Macron – NBC4 Washington

President-elect Donald Trump arrives in Paris to celebrate the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral after a devastating fire in 2019. French President Emmanuel Macron invited Trump as a representative of a “friendly nation,” and his arrival required tight security measures.

Macron and Trump have had a tumultuous relationship in the past, with disagreements over NATO and trade tariffs. Trump’s visit to France comes as European leaders attempt to secure support for Ukraine’s defense against Russia. Macron will also meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, although it is uncertain if Trump will do the same.

In an effort to build trust with the incoming U.S. administration, Zelenskyy’s top aide met with members of Trump’s team earlier this week. Macron’s office downplayed Trump’s invitation, stating that other former politicians had been invited as well. President Joe Biden was also invited but will not attend, with First Lady Jill Biden representing the U.S. instead.

During his previous term, Trump was president when Notre Dame Cathedral caught fire, drawing international attention. Last weekend, Trump announced his intention to nominate Charles Kushner, father of his son-in-law, as ambassador to France. Predecessors in this role include Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson.

The visit signifies a step towards improved relations between the U.S. and France, with Trump participating in the celebration of a historic monument’s restoration.
