House Delays Release of Matt Gaetz Ethics Report After Vote – NBC4 Washington

House lawmakers voted against releasing an Ethics Committee report on an investigation into former Rep. Matt Gaetz, a close ally of President-elect Donald Trump. The report looked into allegations of drug use, sexual misconduct involving a minor, and obstruction of a House probe. The bipartisan Ethics panel met privately but did not release the report, keeping it unclear if or when it will become public.

Gaetz has denied the allegations, but some Senate Republicans have said they would not confirm him as Trump’s attorney general. Despite Gaetz withdrawing his nomination, Democrats pushed for the report’s release. However, Republicans argued that the Ethics Committee has no jurisdiction over former members of Congress.

Democratic lawmakers introduced resolutions to release the report, but Republicans voted to send them back to the Ethics panel. The full House voted to refer the resolutions to the committee, with only one Republican siding with Democrats on the issue.

Democrats have cited past instances of reports being released on former lawmakers by the Ethics Committee, showing precedence for Gaetz’s report to be made public. They argue that keeping the report private undermines the committee’s credibility and the integrity of House proceedings.

The fight over releasing the report continues, with the Ethics Committee stating that they are still discussing the matter. The uncertain future of the report leaves public knowledge about Gaetz’s alleged misconduct up in the air.
