In Phoenix, Lori Vallow Daybell, already serving a life sentence in Idaho for conspiring in the deaths of her two youngest children and another woman, has been found competent to stand trial on additional charges. Two court-appointed doctors in Arizona have declared her fit to face charges of conspiring to kill her estranged husband and a niece’s ex-spouse. Daybell’s fourth husband was shot and killed in 2019, but her brother claimed self-defense and was never charged. She later married Chad Daybell, who was sentenced to death for the murders of her children and his then-wife. Prosecutors in the Idaho case alleged that the couple conspired to eliminate any obstacles to their relationship and for financial benefits. They justified the killings with an apocalyptic belief system involving evil spirits and “zombies.” A trial date has been tentatively set for February 24 in Maricopa County Superior Court. The case has drawn attention for its bizarre details and gruesome allegations.
