The incoming Trump administration is reportedly preparing a list of countries to which it may deport migrants when their home countries refuse to accept them. These countries may include Turks and Caicos, the Bahamas, Panama, and Grenada. The plan could result in thousands of migrants being permanently displaced in countries where they have no connections.
It is unclear if the migrants will be allowed to legally live and work in these countries. The Trump administration is applying pressure, both economic and diplomatic, to get these countries to agree to the deportations. The administration has a goal of deporting migrants within a week of their arrest.
The plan is seen as a way for the Trump administration to work around the issue of migrants who cannot be indefinitely detained due to federal court orders. Trump also wants Mexico to accept non-Mexican migrants who are deported from the U.S., potentially using tariffs as leverage. The administration has also reached out to Turks and Caicos, the Bahamas, Panama, and Grenada to work out deportation agreements.
The American Civil Liberties Union has sued the Trump administration over previous deportation policies, arguing that they put asylum-seekers at risk. The lawsuit is ongoing. The Trump administration has promised to carry out “the largest deportation operation in American history.”
