Former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio to give testimony in trial of retired police officer

Former Proud Boys national chairman Enrique Tarrio is set to testify at the trial of retired Washington, D.C., police officer Shane Lamond. Lamond is accused of leaking confidential information to Tarrio after a Black Lives Matter banner was burned by Proud Boys members. Tarrio, currently serving a 22-year prison sentence for charges related to the Jan. 6 Capitol attack, is expected to be the first defense witness in Lamond’s trial. The trial is being heard by U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson without a jury. Prosecutors have accused Lamond of obstructing justice and making false statements about his interactions with Tarrio.

During opening statements, a prosecutor described Lamond as a “Proud Boys sympathizer” who warned Tarrio about his impending arrest and lied to investigators. The indictment against Lamond alleges that he misled federal investigators about his communications with Tarrio. The trial also heard from acting MPD Capt. Nicole Copeland, who stated that knowledge of Tarrio’s confession to Lamond about burning the banner would have been useful to investigators.

Lamond, who met Tarrio in 2019 and supervised intelligence operations related to groups like the Proud Boys, retired from the police department in May 2023. He was arrested the same month. The trial is ongoing and will determine Lamond’s guilt or innocence on the charges against him. President-elect Trump has suggested he may consider pardoning Tarrio, who was convicted of seditious conspiracy in relation to the Capitol attack.
