DC’s Political Pattie’s shuts down due to social media criticism

Political Pattie’s, a Washington, D.C., sports bar aimed at fostering bipartisan political discussions, has closed its doors for good after facing significant challenges since its opening in September. Owner Andrew Benbow, who co-owned the bar with Sydney Bradford, tried to replicate their bipartisan friendship in a bar setting but struggled to create an environment conducive to open political debate.

The bar, located on 9th and U streets in Northwest Washington, took over from the Dirty Goose, a popular gay bar in the area. Benbow and Bradford initially designed the bar with logos of the Democratic and Republican party mascots, but online backlash forced them to remove these symbols and rename the bar as “Pattie’s Bar.”

Benbow expressed disappointment that the concept of bipartisanship and reaching across political divides was not well-received in D.C. and across the country, leading to the bar’s closure. Structural issues and personal tragedy also contributed to the decision to shut down the establishment.

Despite their efforts to create a space for civil political discourse, it seems that Political Pattie’s was unable to overcome the challenges it faced in an area dominated by other bars. The closure of the bar serves as a reminder of the difficulties in fostering bipartisan dialogue in today’s polarized political climate.
