DC event offers spooky ghost tales for the holiday season

Local literature expert Marianne Noble, a professor at American University, recently shared insights into the historical connection between ghost stories and Christmas at a Profs and Pints event in Washington D.C. Noble explained that the tradition of telling ghost stories during the holiday season dates back to ancient Celtic and German cultures as a way to pass the time during long and dark winters.

Noble highlighted Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” as one of the greatest Christmas ghost stories, emphasizing its themes of charity and benevolence. She also discussed other tales such as “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight,” which convey lessons in chivalry and honesty. Despite the tradition not gaining popularity in the United States, attendees at the event expressed interest in exploring different holiday storytelling traditions.

The event, hosted by Profs and Pints founder Peter Schmidt, aimed to showcase that not all stories during the holiday season are cheerful and bright. Attendees, including D.C. resident Cosette Puckett and Arlington resident Jordan Griffen, appreciated the opportunity to learn about and engage with different storytelling traditions during the festive season.

The event provided a unique and educational experience for attendees, shedding light on the rich tradition of Christmas ghost stories and their enduring significance in literature and culture.
