Former Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks has stepped down to prepare for her new role as a U.S. senator, leading to Tara Jackson becoming the acting county executive. Jackson, who previously served as the county’s chief administrative officer, expects to serve for 4-6 months until a new county executive is chosen in a special election. Jackson has expressed her dedication to the county and plans to continue the priorities set by Alsobrooks.
Jackson has been in public service for nearly 20 years, working to improve operations during the pandemic and manage federal COVID relief funds. She is not interested in running for office but aims to provide a smooth transition for the person who does win the office. The county council, facing a $150 million deficit, has been divided on spending priorities, and Jackson hopes they can work together for the residents of Prince George’s County.
There are additional uncertainties in the county, including the potential relocation of the FBI headquarters to Greenbelt and the efforts to keep the Washington Commanders playing at Northwest Stadium. Jackson also mentioned preparing for the upcoming General Assembly session and ensuring healthcare funding remains a priority. Despite declining to comment on future political aspirations, Jackson remains focused on her current responsibilities.
