President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for Defense Secretary, Pete Hegseth, is facing opposition from Senate Republicans over reports of alleged drinking and mistreatment of women. As many as six GOP senators are uncomfortable supporting Hegseth, who can only afford to lose three Republican votes assuming Democrats oppose him.
Sen. Joni Ernst expressed concerns about Hegseth’s past and plans to question him about allegations of alcohol abuse, misconduct with women, and financial mismanagement. NBC News revealed that Hegseth faced accusations of sexual assault in 2017, which he denied. Other reports suggested he smelled of alcohol before going on air at Fox News.
Although initial allegations did not threaten Hegseth’s nomination, subsequent revelations have caused Senate Republicans to express doubt. Despite some senators downplaying the allegations, others believe Hegseth should address concerns raised about his past conduct to ensure a fair confirmation process.
Former Rep. Matt Gaetz dropped out of consideration for Attorney General due to similar allegations, demonstrating Senate Republicans’ reluctance to support nominees facing controversy. However, Senator Lindsey Graham remains open to supporting Hegseth, emphasizing the importance of a thorough vetting process.
Hegseth’s nomination process continues as he meets with senators on Capitol Hill, with the Trump transition team yet to comment on the situation. Despite the allegations, some Republicans believe Hegseth is the right choice for the role of Defense Secretary in restoring confidence in the military.
