Attorney General of DC files lawsuit against Amazon for covertly excluding specific areas from Prime delivery advantages.

The Attorney General of Washington, D.C. has filed a lawsuit against Amazon, accusing the company of secretly excluding two ZIP codes in the city from its Prime delivery benefits while still charging residents the full subscription price. The lawsuit alleges that since June 2022, Amazon made a secret decision to stop using its own branded trucks to deliver to ZIP codes 20019 and 20020, instead opting for third-party services. Approximately 48,000 Prime members living in these ZIP codes were affected by this change. Attorney General Brian L. Schwalb stated that Amazon is charging residents for a service it promises but does not provide, calling the conduct deceptive.

In response, Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel refuted the claims, stating that the company’s business practices are not discriminatory or deceptive. Nantel explained that due to safety concerns for delivery drivers in the affected ZIP codes, Amazon made adjustments to its operations. The company maintains transparency with customers regarding delivery times during the shopping and checkout process and has offered to work with the Attorney General’s office to improve safety in those areas. Amazon asserts that providing fast and accurate delivery times while prioritizing the safety of customers and delivery partners are not mutually exclusive. The lawsuit aims to stop Amazon’s alleged deceptive conduct and ensure that District residents receive the services they are paying for.
