Trump to Attend Reopening Celebration of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris this Weekend

President-elect Donald Trump will attend the reopening celebration for Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris this weekend, marking his first foreign trip since the election. The cathedral, which has undergone five years of reconstruction following a devastating fire in 2019, will host high-security ceremonies with about 50 heads of state and government expected to attend.

Trump announced his attendance on his Truth Social site, expressing his admiration for the restoration of Notre Dame by President Emmanuel Macron. This trip will be Trump’s first overseas visit since his election, with his previous travels to Scotland and Ireland occurring as a candidate in 2023.

Despite a complicated relationship with Macron, which soured as Trump questioned NATO and criticized European leaders, Macron congratulated Trump on his re-election and is hoping to align on supporting Ukraine against Russia.

The reopening celebrations for Notre Dame will be a multi-day event, starting with a reopening service on Saturday and a concert featuring various international performers. On Sunday, there will be an inaugural Mass and consecration of the new altar, with nearly 170 bishops and priests from the Paris diocese participating.

The festivities will be guarded, with Ile de la Cité being blocked off for tourists and a public viewing area along the River Seine accommodating up to 40,000 spectators. The reconstruction of Notre Dame has been a monumental achievement, symbolizing the resilience and unity of the people of France.
