Great Lakes region prepares for more snowfall following weekend of severe holiday weather

Residents of the Great Lakes region are bracing for more snow and freezing temperatures after a weekend of harsh weather conditions following the Thanksgiving holiday. The National Weather Service has forecasted snowfall overnight into Monday morning, as well as on Wednesday and Thursday, accompanied by gusty winds and freezing temperatures. The region has already seen significant snowfall over the weekend, with several inches accumulating in upstate New York, Pennsylvania, and Michigan due to lake-effect snow.

Despite the wintry conditions, fans at the Bills game in Buffalo, New York, against the San Francisco 49ers embraced the snow and cold temperatures. The NFL team even offered to pay snow shovelers $20 per hour and provide food and hot drinks. The game was played in freezing temperatures, which energize both the players and fans. Western New York and northern New York were expected to receive more snowfall, prompting Governor Kathy Hochul to declare emergencies in those areas.

Parts of Michigan, particularly the Upper Peninsula, have also experienced heavy snowfall, with up to 27 inches accumulating in some areas. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro signed a disaster emergency proclamation due to the significant snowfall in Erie County, while eastern Kentucky and West Virginia saw a light dusting of snow.

As temperatures continue to drop across the Eastern U.S., residents are advised to take precautions. The cold weather is expected to linger in the region over the next few days, with temperatures dipping well below average. Despite the challenging conditions, residents in the region are resilient and making the most of the winter weather.
