Saturn’s famous rings are set to disappear from view for a short time as they become aligned with Earth every 13-15 years. The rings will vanish entirely from ground telescopes by March 2025, reappearing temporarily in November before becoming visible again. The rings, made of ice and rock particles, are believed to have formed late in Saturn’s life and are maintained in a delicate balance. While they may disappear from view due to their thinness and flatness, they will eventually vanish entirely due to gravitational forces pulling them into the planet over hundreds of millions of years. Cassini spacecraft observations suggested that the rings could disappear in as little as 100 million years. Despite this, Saturn’s rings will continue to be a prominent feature in the solar system for the foreseeable future.
