Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited President-elect Donald Trump in Florida for a dinner meeting at Mar-a-Lago following Trump’s threat of a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico. Trump’s plan for tariffs was prompted by his concerns about crime and drugs coming into the U.S. from those countries, and he also threatened a 10% tariff against China. Trudeau initially spoke with Trump by phone, and later held a virtual meeting to discuss the issue with other Canadian officials. Trudeau’s visit to meet with Trump in Palm Beach was unannounced, and the two leaders had a private dinner meeting. Trump also had a “very productive” call with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. Through his announcements and actions, Trump has been consistent in his stance on cracking down on illegal immigration and drug trafficking, despite declining violent crime rates in the U.S. over recent years. The proposed tariffs on Canada and Mexico remain a point of contention, with Trudeau highlighting the potential harm that such measures could have on Canadian and American businesses and consumers.
