Task Force in Montgomery County Works to Keep Holiday Travelers Safe from Alcohol Influence

As the holiday season approaches, the Montgomery County Police Department has launched its annual Holiday Alcohol Task Force to keep families safe on the road. Led by Sgt. Patrick Kepp, the task force aims to stop impaired drivers – individuals who have been drinking or consuming drugs – to prevent accidents and fatalities. Kepp, who lost both his legs in a crash caused by a teen driver in 2023, understands the importance of this mission on a personal level.

The task force, consisting of over 40 officers patrolling Wednesday through Saturday nights, has already made 29 impaired driving arrests in its first week, with numbers expected to surpass last year’s total of 170 arrests. Kepp emphasizes that impaired driving is entirely preventable and turns a vehicle into a deadly weapon when someone gets behind the wheel.

With national data showing over 10,000 fatal crashes each year, the task force aims to make roads safer by encouraging drivers to make responsible decisions. Programs such as Sober Ride, as well as rideshare services like Uber and Lyft, offer alternatives to driving under the influence. Montgomery County Police are urging everyone to make smart choices during the holidays by avoiding drinking and driving. By working together to prevent impaired driving, communities can ensure a safe and joyous holiday season for all.
