Sean P. Grayson to be released under certain conditions following the Sonya Massey shooting

The Fourth District Appellate Court reversed the detention order of former Sangamon County Sheriff deputy Sean P. Grayson, charged in the fatal shooting of Sonya Massey. Grayson will be released with conditions as the court wants a hearing to determine the least restrictive pretrial release conditions. Judge Cadagin will set a date to consider these conditions, which may include home confinement or monitoring. Grayson’s attorney argued he is not a flight risk due to his health issues. The shooting of Massey, a Black woman, was captured on bodycam and led to nationwide shock. The U.S. Department of Justice has launched an investigation into the sheriff’s office. Grayson is currently held in the Macon County Jail. Other issues need to be resolved before his release, including a potential appeal to the Illinois State Supreme Court.
