DC holiday markets shine a light on local businesses

The National Retail Federation estimates that 183 million shoppers are expected this year during the period between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday, making it the busiest time for retailers. Small businesses are particularly reliant on this season, with the DowntownDC Holiday Market in Penn Quarter showcasing 110 vendors to encourage shoppers to support local artisans and makers. Among the vendors are I See Spain, Alyssa’s Bazaar, Pearl’s Fine Teas, and Savvy Scents by Sherrie, all of whom heavily rely on holiday sales for a significant portion of their yearly income. For these businesses, face-to-face interactions with customers during the holiday season are crucial, as online sales can’t replicate the personal connection felt at the market. With the holiday market already experiencing high demand since opening on Nov. 22, the DowntownDC BID has decided to expand its hours until Dec. 23 to accommodate shoppers. The market serves as a crucial platform for these small businesses to thrive and succeed during this make-or-break period.
