Suspect caught attempting to transport meth-laden garments on departing flight from LAX

Raj Matharu, a 31-year-old man from Northridge, California, was indicted by prosecutors for attempting to smuggle more than 30 pounds of methamphetamine onto an Australia-bound flight departing from Los Angeles International Airport earlier this month. The drugs, hidden within clothing items, were detected by airport screening personnel and law enforcement officers. Matharu was found with two suitcases filled with fabric that had been impregnated with methamphetamine, designed to avoid detection. The drugs were estimated to weigh between 15 and 20 kilograms when separated from the clothing. U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada praised law enforcement for intercepting the contraband, emphasizing the dangers of drug trafficking and the impact it has on communities worldwide. Matharu, who was arrested at the airport, is facing a federal charge of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute. He is currently free on a $10,000 bond and is scheduled for an arraignment hearing in federal court in Los Angeles. If convicted, he could face a prison sentence ranging from 10 years to life. This case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat drug smuggling and protect public safety.
