Local non-profit “Food and Friends” delivered Thanksgiving meals to families across the greater D.C. region, serving those in need in the community. The organization, which works to curb food insecurity, prepared over 4,500 meals for this year’s holiday. Volunteers, including executive chef Carrie Stoltzfus, have been busy cooking and boxing meals since 4 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day, with preparations beginning as early as July. The meals include a roasted turkey, cornbread stuffing, roasted potatoes, and more, all tailored to meet the specific dietary needs of the clients.
One of the recipients of a Thanksgiving meal, Lánye Spicer, expressed her gratitude for the service provided by Food and Friends. Having recently battled cancer, she appreciated the opportunity to host her loved ones for a Thanksgiving meal without the stress of cooking. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser stopped by to thank the volunteers for their dedication and commitment to helping those in need.
Food and Friends not only provides meals for Thanksgiving but also supports clients throughout the year with medically-tailored meals and nutrition counseling. The organization’s work is crucial in meeting the needs of individuals facing various health challenges. Through their efforts, they ensure that everyone in the community has access to nutritious meals, especially during times of celebration like Thanksgiving.
