D.C. Central Kitchen, a nonprofit organization in Washington, D.C., is gearing up to distribute thousands of free Thanksgiving meals to the community. With the help of volunteers and organizations, they are working tirelessly to ensure that meals are ready to be handed out on Thursday. This year, they are set to serve around 69,000 meals for Thanksgiving, including nearly 30,000 on the day itself.
The nonprofit, which has been in operation for over 30 years, also focuses on combating hunger and poverty through job training and job creation. According to CEO Mike Curtin, Jr., the support of individuals, foundations, and corporations in the D.C. area has allowed them to provide meals and support to smaller grassroots organizations and nonprofits.
On an average day, D.C. Central Kitchen serves about 16,000 meals, a feat made possible by the dedication and hard work of volunteers. One volunteer, Teresa Poirier, expressed her joy in being able to contribute positively to the community by helping prepare meals for those in need.
The organization is always looking for extra help and welcomes volunteers to join their efforts. As food insecurity continues to be a pressing issue, D.C. Central Kitchen remains committed to alleviating hunger and poverty in the community.
