The International Criminal Court’s chief prosecutor has requested an arrest warrant for Myanmar’s military leader, Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing, for crimes against humanity committed against the Rohingya Muslim minority. The allegations stem from a campaign of ethnic cleansing in 2017 that led to nearly a million Rohingya fleeing to Bangladesh. The prosecutor’s move to issue a warrant demonstrates a commitment to seeking justice for the Rohingya people. The prosecutor also plans to request more warrants for Myanmar’s leaders.
The prosecutor’s predecessor had requested an investigation into the situation in 2019, allowing for investigations into any crimes linked to the Rohingya committed at least partly in a member state of the court, like Bangladesh. The recent request for an arrest warrant for Hlaing comes after a rebel group seized a trading town in northeastern Myanmar, adding to the challenges faced by the military-led government.
The International Court of Justice has also advanced a separate case against Myanmar for genocide against the Rohingya, with several countries supporting the case brought by Gambia. The situation in Myanmar has been marked by ongoing conflict, with the military seizing power in February 2021 and facing opposition from armed militias in border regions.
The prosecutor’s request for an arrest warrant marks a significant step in seeking accountability for the crimes committed against the Rohingya, highlighting the ongoing efforts to pursue justice for the persecuted minority group.
