Police Investigate Viral Street Racing Incident in Tysons, Virginia
TYSONS, Va. – A street racing video taken in Tysons has rapidly gained notoriety, amassing over 75 million views on social media platforms after being shared by Elon Musk. The under 30-second clip captures a dramatic race between a blue Lamborghini and a Tesla Cybertruck on Leesburg Pike (Route 7), with the Cybertruck emerging victorious—a detail that likely fueled Musk’s interest.
Witnesses describe the scene, which unfolded last week around 2 p.m., as packed with onlookers recording the event. Ryan Haggerty, who works nearby, noted the area’s reputation for late-night supercar races. Another local, Mansour Ghaderi, shared a more alarming encounter: he was threatened by an aggressive driver who brandished a gun when Ghaderi did not accelerate quickly enough.
Street racing is classified as reckless driving and is illegal in Virginia. In response to the rising trend of car meetups and street racing, Fairfax Police established a task force earlier this year, which has reportedly yielded positive results. However, public opinion on the viral race is mixed; while some support safe racing as an exhilarating spectacle, others express concern for public safety.
"I like to see it as long as it’s safe," said Haggerty. Another onlooker humorously remarked on the risks, suggesting that if drivers can afford the fines, they should feel free to race.
Fairfax County police confirmed that their Traffic Division is actively investigating the incident, although it remains unsure what charges, if any, the drivers might face. Notably, Maryland has recently enacted a law introducing stricter penalties for illegal street racing, reflecting a growing concern over public safety in the face of such activities.
