Au Pair Pleads Guilty to Manslaughter in Virginia Double Homicide

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. – In a shocking case that has gripped the local community, 24-year-old Juliana Peres Magalhães pleaded guilty to manslaughter on Tuesday in connection with the shooting death of 39-year-old Joseph Ryan. The tragic incident occurred on February 24, 2023, at the residence where Magalhães was employed as an au pair for Brendan and Christine Banfield in Herndon.

Magalhães was arrested on October 19, 2023, following extensive investigations into the circumstances surrounding Ryan’s death. Initially charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm during the commission of a felony, she has remained in custody since her arrest. The relationship between Magalhães and Brendan Banfield reportedly evolved into a romantic involvement, which authorities allege played a role in the events leading to the double homicide.

Brendan Banfield, 39, has since been indicted on multiple counts of aggravated murder for the deaths of his wife, Christine Banfield, 37, and Joseph Ryan. Banfield’s trial is set to commence on February 3, 2025, and if convicted, he could face a life sentence.

Magalhães, who has entered a plea deal, could receive a maximum sentence of 10 years for her manslaughter charge, with sentencing scheduled for March 21, 2025. This case highlights complex interpersonal dynamics, as evidenced by the couple’s travels and documented romantic history prior to the tragic events. The Fairfax County community continues to grapple with the implications of this tragic double homicide, awaiting further developments as the case moves forward.
