Wall Street Opens Lower Amid Earnings and Economic Data
Wall Street ticked down slightly before the market opened on Tuesday, as investors braced for a wave of corporate earnings reports and new economic data, including job statistics and consumer confidence levels. Futures for the S&P 500 slipped less than 0.1%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average futures declined by 0.3%.
Shares of McDonald’s fell 2.3% despite surpassing sales and profit expectations. The fast-food giant’s $5 value meals appeal to inflation-sensitive customers. However, concerns linger about an E. coli outbreak linked to raw onions, leading to the removal of Quarter Pounders from 900 locations and raising questions about the impact on current quarter sales.
In the housing sector, D.R. Horton faced a significant 9.6% drop after reporting decreased sales and profits that did not meet analyst forecasts. Ford experienced a notable 5.5% slide following a revelation of a 26% decline in net profit, attributed to a $1 billion charge from a canceled three-row electric SUV, prompting a lower forecast for full-year earnings.
Conversely, Trump Media & Technology Group Corp. shares surged 20% amid increasing political anticipation as Election Day approaches. Alphabet, Google’s parent company, will release its quarterly results later in the day.
Internationally, European markets showed mixed results with France’s CAC 40 up 0.4% and Germany’s DAX gaining nearly 0.3%. Meanwhile, Japan reported a 2.4% unemployment rate, reflecting an improvement and contributing to the country’s stock gains, while U.S. energy stocks faced pressure alongside fluctuating oil prices.
As the countdown to the U.S. presidential election continues, financial markets typically experience volatility, with historical patterns suggesting post-election stability regardless of the outcome.
