Erykah Badu Honored as Fashion Icon at CFDA Awards

NEW YORK (AP) — Erykah Badu received the esteemed Fashion Icon Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) during a ceremony held at the American Museum of Natural History on Monday night. Dressed in a stunning Thom Browne jacket and an elaborate jewel-adorned headdress, Badu expressed her joy at receiving the award she’d been seeking since she was just six years old.

The Grammy-winning artist, known for her Afro-centric style that challenges conventional fashion norms with tall hats, oversized jewelry, and vibrant patchwork fabrics, has transformed red carpet expectations over the years. Introduced by André 3000, the father of her son, Badu playfully remarked, “The world is a private joke between me and my things.”

The event, attended by celebrities such as Katie Holmes and Kylie Jenner, celebrated the best in fashion design. Key awards included the Womenswear Designer of the Year, awarded to Rachel Scott of Diotima, who expressed gratitude for her roots in Jamaica. Troye Sivan presented the Menswear Designer Award to Willy Chavarria, who reflected on the current political climate and the importance of diversity in fashion.

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand opened the event by urging attendees to mobilize their influence for voter turnout, emphasizing the critical nature of participation in democracy. Other notable awards went to emerging designer Henry Zankov and accessory designer Raul Lopez, who dedicated his win to inspiring immigrant youth in the industry.

Daniel Roseberry of Schiaparelli was recognized as the International Designer of the Year, marking a significant achievement as the first American to lead a French couture house. Badu’s recognition places her alongside previous CFDA honorees like Serena Williams and Zendaya, solidifying her status as a trendsetter in the fashion world.
