Press Release: City of Fairfax Launches New Security Patrols in Old Town and Parks
FAIRFAX, VA – In a bid to enhance community safety, the City of Fairfax Police Department has initiated a pilot program introducing private security patrols in the Old Town commercial district and surrounding parks. The program, which runs through December 22, aims to bolster crime prevention efforts by increasing visibility.
The patrols will be conducted by Alpha Security, a company already under contract with the City’s Parks and Recreation Department. These unarmed and uniformed guards will operate daily on foot, covering the Old Town area from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and monitoring Stafford Drive Park and Draper Drive Park from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.
“The added visibility will help deter crime and create a safer environment for residents, businesses, and visitors,” stated a spokesperson from the City of Fairfax Police Department. While the private security guards do not possess enforcement powers, they will coordinate with local police officers to address any enforcement issues that may arise.
This initiative is part of the city’s broader commitment to improve safety in high-traffic areas, addressing community concerns about security. Throughout the eight-week trial period, officials will systematically evaluate the program’s impact on crime rates and community feedback to determine its future viability as a security resource.
