Winter Skin Care: Expert Tips to Combat Dryness

As winter approaches, colder temperatures can bring significant challenges for skin health. According to Dr. Adam Friedman, a dermatology professor at George Washington University, the dry, cold air combined with indoor heating often leads to itchy, flaky skin. “Tis the season to be flaky,” he remarked, emphasizing the importance of protective measures against moisture loss.

Dr. Friedman notes that while washing hands is essential, frequent washing can inadvertently strip the skin of natural moisture. “Water is the most drying substance on the planet,” he explained, suggesting that people should use gentler soaps and moisturizers during the winter months. He recommends products designed for eczema, even for those without the condition, as they typically contain beneficial ingredients like colloidal oatmeal, which helps alleviate inflammation.

To maximize the benefits of moisturizers, Dr. Friedman advises applying them to damp skin, rather than excessively wet skin. For those prone to dry hands, he suggests what he calls a “hand rash boot camp”: soak hands in lukewarm water, pat dry, apply a thick moisturizer, and wear gloves for 30 minutes to enhance moisture retention.

If dryness escalates to fissures or cracks, he recommends using a liquid bandage instead of traditional bandages for better protection. Additionally, Dr. Friedman stresses the necessity of applying sunscreen, even in winter, to shield skin from harmful UV rays.

As we face colder months, incorporating these expert tips can help maintain skin health and prevent excessive drying. For more updates and expert advice, consider subscribing to WTOP for daily headlines.
