A Bowie police officer has been indicted on multiple charges after firing shots at an unarmed man during a traffic stop last month. The incident, captured on body and dash cameras, showed Sergeant Robert Warrington firing a shot at a passenger who was allegedly reaching for a hat blown onto the road. The bullet struck a passing vehicle but did not injure anyone.
Following the indictment, the victim spoke out in an exclusive interview with FOX 5, expressing his heartbreak and frustration knowing that the officer had not been arrested despite the dangerous encounter. The victim recounted his fear as the officer pulled out his service weapon, preparing himself for more shots.
Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy announced the grand jury indictment against Warrington, charging him with attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, misconduct in office, and reckless endangerment. Bowie City Police Chief Dwayne Preston voiced support for the grand jury’s decision, emphasizing the importance of valuing human life.
The community has been questioning the events that led to the shooting and demanding transparency and accountability. Bowie Mayor Tim Adams stressed the importance of holding everyone accountable for their actions. Warrington, a 12-year veteran of the department, has been suspended without pay. He will appear in court for a first appearance in the coming weeks. The victim, who was never charged or arrested, fully cooperated with the investigation.
