Italian surfer Giulia Manfrini tragically passed away after a fatal encounter with a swordfish while surfing near the Mentawai Islands Regency in Indonesia on October 18. The swordfish unexpectedly jumped towards her, piercing her chest, leading to a deep two-inch wound. Despite efforts to save her, she succumbed to her injuries at a local health center.
Manfrini, co-founder of AWAVE Travel, was described by her colleague as the “lifeblood” of the company, known for her infectious smile and love of surfing. She was a former snowboard instructor and had a passion for chasing waves all over the world. In a heartfelt Instagram post, her colleague expressed their love for her and the sorrow of saying goodbye.
Manfrini had visited the Mentawai Islands before and shared her love for nature in a 2022 Instagram post witnessing a full circle rainbow in the sky. She was described as a talented individual who enjoyed music, dancing, beach volleyball, and hunting for waves and powder.
