Lebanon’s Hezbollah group declared a new phase in its fight against Israeli troops following the killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar in Gaza. The conflict has resulted in the deaths of many civilians and displaced thousands in Gaza and Lebanon. The war has also led to a cholera case in northern Lebanon, prompting UNICEF to activate an emergency response.
In response to the escalating conflict, world leaders, including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, are calling for sustainable ceasefires in Gaza and Lebanon. Russian President Vladimir Putin hopes to de-escalate tensions in the region while urging for a settlement to protect civilians.
Following Sinwar’s death, Israel is urged to pursue peace negotiations while also continuing military operations. Hamas vows to resist and continue fighting. Hezbollah expressed condolences for Sinwar’s death and declares a new phase in their fight against Israel.
Meanwhile, UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon are maintaining positions despite pressure from the Israel Defense Forces. Israel has allowed humanitarian aid into Gaza in response to the dire situation there.
Finally, Iran honors Sinwar as a martyr and symbol of resistance against occupation. In response to the conflict, an East Jerusalem man is set to be indicted for planning an attack on a protest in Tel Aviv. Israel is under pressure to seek peace while continuing military operations.
