Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show returns after hiatus: What caused its disappearance? – NBC New York

After a five-year hiatus, the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is returning with its first-ever all-women lineup of performers. The show, which was canceled in 2019 amid controversy and declining viewership, is set to air on Oct. 15 in New York City. The announcement of the show’s return came after years of criticism from customers and the #MeToo movement, prompting the brand to include more body-positive messaging and models in its campaigns.

The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show first began in 1995 and quickly became a cultural phenomenon, featuring models like Tyra Banks and Heidi Klum walking the runway in the brand’s signature lingerie. However, by 2018, the show faced its lowest ratings in history, leading to its cancellation in 2019.

Controversy continued to follow the brand as former chief marketing officer Ed Razek faced backlash for comments about not including transgender models in the show. The brand also faced scrutiny over alleged ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. In response, Victoria’s Secret underwent a major overhaul, including hiring its first openly transgender model and splitting from its parent company, L Brands.

The 2024 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show will feature performances by Cher, Tyla, and K-pop star Lisa, with returning models like Tyra Banks and Gigi Hadid. Fans can stream the show on Amazon Prime Video and the brand’s social media accounts. The show aims to reflect a new era for Victoria’s Secret, with a focus on inclusivity and diversity.
