Abortion has become the top issue in the presidential election for women under 30 since Vice President Kamala Harris replaced President Joe Biden, according to a survey by KFF. The survey found that 2 in 5 young women rank abortion as their top concern, compared to 1 in 5 in the spring. Abortion is now the third most important issue for women overall, behind inflation and threats to democracy. The survey was conducted between September and October and included 678 female voters.
The landscape shifted in 2022 when the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, prompting many Republican-controlled states to enforce abortion bans. This change has made abortion access a central issue for Harris’ campaign. Younger women, like 19-year-old Ally Zobel, are paying close attention to this issue. Zobel is preparing to vote for the first time and supports Harris’ calls to restore abortion rights nationally.
Overall, about two-thirds of women believe the election will have a major impact on abortion access. Most women think that Trump would sign a federal law banning abortions after 15 weeks, while they believe Harris would sign a law protecting access to abortion nationwide if Congress were to pass it.
The survey also found a deep partisan split on which candidate would be better for abortion access, with most women preferring Harris over Trump. The survey highlights how the issue of abortion has become a significant factor in the upcoming presidential election.
