A recent archaeological discovery at a historic site in Jordan has revealed a secret tomb beneath the famous Treasury monument in Petra, with the remains of at least a dozen Nabateans being unearthed. The discovery, made by a team led by archaeologists and TV host Josh Gates, has been likened to a scene from the movie “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.” The tomb, which is a significant find as most tombs in Petra have been found empty, sheds new light on the lives of the early Nabataeans who built Petra and the purpose of the Treasury itself.
The excavation also uncovered an artifact in the form of a ceramic vessel that bears a striking resemblance to the Holy Grail prop used in the movie. The Holy Grail, a chalice believed to grant immortality in the film, was found being clutched by a skeleton in the tomb. This real-life discovery added an extra layer of intrigue to the excavation, with Gates noting the uncanny parallels between the artifact and its Hollywood counterpart.
The excavation of the Treasury was documented in a two-part episode of the show “Expeditions Unknown” and aired on Discovery+. The discovery and subsequent findings are of historic proportions, shedding new light on the ancient Nabataean civilization and offering insights into the purpose of the iconic Treasury monument in Petra.
