Giant pandas making their way to Washington DC

China is sending two new giant pandas, Bao Li and Qing Bao, to the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. The pandas are three years old and are on their way from Dujiangyan, China. They left China on a FedEx cargo jet dubbed the “Panda Express” and will be arriving in D.C. soon. The China Wildlife Conservation Association has made sure that the pandas have plenty of food and medicine for their journey.

The National Zoo will be closed on Tuesday to give the new pandas time to settle in before they make their public debut. This arrival comes less than a year after the previous pair of pandas left the zoo. Bao Li is the son of Bao Bao, who was born at the zoo in 2013. The National Zoo announced in May that the pair would be arriving by the end of 2024.

Brandie Smith, the director of the National Zoo, expressed excitement about the arrival of the new pandas, highlighting the importance of their partnership with China in the conservation and breeding of pandas. The zoo hopes that this partnership will help in growing the panda population, understanding how to care for these bears, and ultimately, protecting wild pandas and their habitats. This new addition to the National Zoo’s panda family marks a historic moment in their ongoing conservation efforts.
