Dog Rescued During Hurricane Milton Faces Felony Charges – Owner of ‘Trooper’

Gov. Ron DeSantis announced that the owner of the abandoned dog known as “Trooper” during Hurricane Milton has been identified and will face prosecution for aggravated animal cruelty. Trooper was found tied to a fence and up to his belly in standing water along Interstate 75 by a Florida Highway Patrol trooper. The owner could face up to five years in prison for the third-degree felony. The discovery of Trooper, who was left behind during the hurricane evacuation, sparked outrage on social media. Hillsborough County State Attorney Suzy Lopez stated that those who commit crimes during a state of emergency will be punished to the fullest extent of the law. She hopes that animal cruelty will soon be added to the list of applicable crimes due to Trooper’s case. Lopez emphasized the seriousness of animal cruelty in Hillsborough County and expressed that those who mistreat animals will not go unpunished. Trooper, a Bull terrier, is currently in the care of the Leon County Humane Society. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting vulnerable members of society, including animals.
