30-year-old Utah mother who launched GoFundMe campaign for her own funeral passes away

Erika Diarte-Carr, a 30-year-old single mother from Utah, passed away after a two-year battle with terminal cancer. She left behind two young children, Jeremiah and Aaliyah, whom she raised in Ogden. Carr was diagnosed with stage 4 small cell lung carcinoma in 2022 and later developed Cushing Syndrome, leading to various health issues. In September, she was given three months to live and had to plan her own funeral, as she did not have life insurance and was unable to work due to her illness.

Despite her initial reluctance to accept help, Carr started a GoFundMe page to raise funds for her funeral expenses and to provide financial stability for her children. The page surpassed $1 million in donations, allowing Carr to plan a big family trip for her children and set up a trust fund for them. She expressed gratitude to donors for leaving a positive impact on her children’s lives.

Carr’s cousin, Angelique Rivera, announced her passing on Facebook, noting that Carr had fought a long and tough battle and had now joined her deceased family members on “the other side.” Rivera shared Carr’s determination to stay strong for her children until the very end. Carr’s story highlights the struggles faced by those battling terminal illness and the importance of community support in times of need.
