Harris suggests legalizing marijuana industry as part of efforts to engage with Black men

Vice President Kamala Harris has proposed a comprehensive economic agenda specifically aimed at Black men, whose support for the Democratic presidential nominee has shown signs of slipping. This agenda includes legalizing marijuana nationally for recreational use, ensuring Black entrepreneurs have access to the cannabis industry, and offering 1 million forgivable loans to Black business owners. Harris also plans to introduce new federal regulations for cryptocurrency to protect investors in the digital currency market.

The Harris campaign believes that legalizing marijuana on a national level will break down unjust legal barriers that have held back Black men, especially considering their disproportionate policing for marijuana use in the past. They also plan to ensure that Black men can access wealth and jobs in the emerging cannabis industry. This policy is in stark contrast to the approach taken by the Trump administration towards marijuana during his presidency, although Biden’s administration has taken steps to reclassify the drug to a less dangerous Schedule III substance.

Harris’ economic agenda also includes expanding education, training, and mentorship programs for Black men, with a focus on increasing Black male teachers, promoting apprenticeships and credentialing opportunities, and strengthening health initiatives to address diseases that disproportionately impact African American people. This agenda comes as polls show Trump making inroads with Black voters, raising concerns for Democrats about Black voter turnout in the upcoming election. Harris is expected to further discuss her economic proposals at campaign events in Erie, Pennsylvania.
