The Justice Department has filed a lawsuit against Virginia over its efforts to purge voter rolls within 90 days of an election, claiming the state’s actions violate federal voting laws. Governor Glenn Youngkin’s executive order requiring daily updates to the voting list has led to U.S. citizens being wrongly identified as noncitizens and having their registrations canceled unnecessarily. The DOJ argues that this confusion and removal of eligible voters goes against the intent of the Quiet Period Provision. Youngkin has denounced the lawsuit as politically motivated and an attack on election legitimacy. This is the second DOJ lawsuit in recent months targeting state actions that could disenfranchise naturalized American citizens so close to federal elections. The Virginia Department of Elections and elections commissioner, both named in the lawsuit, have not yet commented on the matter. This legal action is part of ongoing efforts to ensure that states comply with federal voting laws and protect the rights of all eligible voters during the election process.
