China recently launched large-scale military exercises around Taiwan and its outlying islands in response to what it called “separatist acts by Taiwan independence forces.” This comes after Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te reaffirmed the island’s commitment to resist annexation by Beijing and maintain its independence. China has long considered Taiwan a breakaway province and has consistently aimed to politically unite it with mainland China.
The military drills, named “Joint Sword-2024B,” involved warships and fighter jets and are part of China’s efforts to pressure Taiwan. The U.S. has expressed support for Taiwan and has vowed to defend the island in the event of a Chinese invasion. The Biden administration’s approach to Taiwan includes deepening economic relations, strengthening security cooperation, and elevating Taiwan’s international stature.
Experts believe that Taiwan will continue to be a significant issue in U.S.-China relations in the coming years. While former President Donald Trump showed skepticism towards supporting Taiwan, Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to continue the Biden administration’s approach towards Taiwan. The Brookings Institution think tank predicts that Taiwan will remain a key focus for U.S. policy in the region.
