SpaceX is preparing for the fifth test flight of its Starship megarocket, which is intended to eventually ferry NASA astronauts to the moon. The upcoming launch follows approval from the FAA and is scheduled for Sunday, October 13. Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, has ambitious plans for Starship, including transporting humans to Mars by 2028. The rocket, lauded as the biggest and most powerful ever built, will attempt to replicate a successful landing like its previous one in June. Engineers hope to return the Super Heavy booster rocket intact for the first time.
The test flight will be livestreamed on SpaceX’s website and social media platforms, as well as the new X TV app. The Starship is a key part of NASA’s Artemis campaign, aiming to establish a lunar settlement on the moon’s south pole. SpaceX was paid $2.9 billion by NASA to develop the spacecraft for this purpose. The ultimate goal is to extract water ice from the moon’s surface for drinking, breathing, and rocket fuel, enabling crewed trips to Mars. Starship’s first crewed test flight is part of the Polaris Program, funded by SpaceX and Jared Isaacman. Despite some previous explosions during tests, SpaceX officials say the craft’s performance has improved with each demonstration. The success of the Starship will play a crucial role in the future of space exploration and the possibility of crewed missions to Mars.
