Fall Back and Say Goodbye to Daylight Saving Time

With just three weeks left until Election Day and the end of daylight saving time in 2024, preparations are underway for the twice-annual clock change. On Sunday, November 3, clocks will “fall back” an hour, giving Americans an extra hour of sleep. Daylight saving time will then begin again on March 9, 2025, when clocks “spring forward” an hour to add more daylight in the evenings. Despite some legislative efforts to end daylight saving time, the practice is still in effect for most U.S. states.

Daylight saving time started in 2024 on March 10, when clocks moved forward an hour. The push to make daylight saving time permanent was brought before Congress in recent years, but the Sunshine Protection Act has yet to be passed into law. Not all states and U.S. territories participate in daylight saving time, with Hawaii and most of Arizona opting out. Five other U.S. territories also do not observe daylight saving time.

The Northern Hemisphere’s autumnal equinox marks the beginning of the fall season, with the end of daylight saving time signaling the transition to shorter days and longer nights. With ongoing discussions about the future of daylight saving time and its impact across different states and territories, the clock change continues to be a topic of interest and debate among Americans.
