In a thrilling home opener, the Washington Capitals fell short to the New Jersey Devils with a final score of 5-3. Despite a sold-out crowd and more than 70 team alumni in attendance to celebrate the Capitals’ 50th anniversary, the team couldn’t secure a tying goal late in the game. Devils’ forward Paul Cotter scored two goals, bringing his season total to four in just four games. Capitals star Alex Ovechkin was held without a shot for only the 23rd time in his career, but managed to chip in with an assist and six hits.
New Jersey’s Seamus Casey, Tomas Tatar, and Dawson Mercer also contributed with goals, while Erik Haula and Stefan Noesen each had three assists. John Carlson and Dylan Strome scored for the Capitals, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Devils’ lead. The game was not without its challenges, as Capitals defenseman Matt Roy exited with a lower-body injury.
The Devils’ strong offensive play and solid defense allowed them to secure the victory, while the Capitals will look to regroup as they prepare to face the Vegas Golden Knights in their next game. Despite the loss, the excitement surrounding the Capitals’ 50th anniversary celebration and the presence of team alumni made for an unforgettable evening in Washington.
