Manassas City School Board to Consider Surplus Property Resolution for Jennie Dean Elementary

The Manassas City School Board is set to vote on a surplus property resolution in relation to the new Jennie Dean Elementary School. The resolution is a part of the necessary boundary line adjustment for the school, allowing for the swapping of certain portions of property between the School Board and the city of Manassas. The resolution was up for discussion at a recent meeting with no further discussion outside of Superintendent Kevin Newman’s recap of the resolution. Previous disagreements between the School Board and City Council over the conditions of a special use permit required for the construction of the new building, particularly regarding the fate of the old Jennie Dean school building, were highlighted. The City Council approved the permit with conditions requiring the School Board to assist in historical investigations of the site and prepare a plan for the existing building. Concerns were raised by School Board members regarding the potential demolition of the old building and the broader issues of land use and historical preservation. The new Jennie Dean Elementary School, set to serve pre-kindergarten through 4th-grade students, is expected to be completed by late 2026 or 2027. Overall, the resolution and discussions surrounding the property swap and the fate of the old building are part of ongoing efforts to move the new Dean project forward.
