Idaho is currently experiencing widespread wildfires, with over half a million acres burned and more than a dozen fires blazing across the state. The Boise National Forest has been particularly affected, with fires burning over 350,000 acres and causing very unhealthy levels of air quality. The Red Rock fire near Salmon has burned nearly 70,000 acres and is currently 19% contained, with firefighters working to prevent further spread by burning areas near forest roads and building fire lines.
The Garden Fire, also near Salmon, has burned nearly 10,000 acres with no containment. Fire conditions are expected to be somewhat quieter over the weekend due to cooler temperatures, but officials are still navigating the situation day by day. Smoke from the fires is providing some relief in terms of shading and cooler temperatures, but an air quality advisory has been issued for the region due to pollutants that can cause breathing issues, especially for children, elderly people, and those with respiratory problems. State officials recommend limiting outdoor activity to reduce exposure to harmful air quality conditions.
