Utility providers in Florida are preparing for over a million power outages as Hurricane Milton approaches, with more than 25,000 outages already reported. Duke Energy Florida is warning customers to expect extended outages, mobilizing 10,000 responders to address potential outages. Florida Power and Light Company has prepositioned a workforce of 14,500 to handle power outages after the storm. Despite improvements, strong winds and flooding are expected to cause power outages in the state. Hurricane Milton’s wide-reaching impacts are expected to affect cities and counties not directly in its path.
Residents are advised not to walk, swim, or drive through floodwaters, and to turn off power at the circuit breaker if evacuating. Recommendations include staying away from fallen power lines, not touching circuit breakers on wet surfaces, and not using submerged electrical equipment. Preparation tips include having batteries, nonperishable food, and water on hand, as well as unplugging appliances before outages.
Various utility companies in Florida are providing ways to report and check on outages. Restoration efforts will prioritize critical facilities, power plants, and major thoroughfares in order to restore power to the largest number of customers as quickly as possible. Customers are encouraged to prepare for extended power outages and to follow safety guidelines during and after the storm to minimize risks and facilitate recovery efforts.
