South Carolina death row inmate forced to pick between methods of execution

South Carolina death row inmate Richard Moore has been given the option of choosing between a firing squad, the electric chair, or lethal injection for his Nov. 1 execution. Moore, who is appealing to the U.S. Supreme Court to stop the execution, is facing the death penalty for the 1999 shooting of store clerk James Mahoney. Moore, who is Black, claims he was convicted by a jury that did not have any African Americans. If executed, Moore would be the first person in South Carolina to be put to death who was initially unarmed and then defended themselves when threatened.
The state’s electric chair, firing squad, and lethal injection methods have been tested and found to be ready for use. South Carolina recently resumed executions after a 13-year pause due to the inability to obtain lethal injection drugs, with Freddie Owens being the first inmate put to death in September. Moore plans to ask Governor Henry McMaster for mercy and to reduce his sentence to life without parole, although no South Carolina governor has ever granted clemency in the modern era of the death penalty.
South Carolina has put 44 inmates to death since 1976, but the death row population has decreased significantly in recent years. The state currently has 31 condemned inmates, with several receiving different prison sentences after successful appeals and others dying of natural causes. Moore, who has no violations on his prison record, has offered to work to help rehabilitate other prisoners if his sentence is reduced.
