Jazzmyne Townsend, a dedicated teacher at Stanton Elementary School in D.C., was surprised with the 2025 D.C. Teacher of the Year award by Mayor Muriel Bowser. Joined by D.C. Public Schools Chancellor Lewis Ferebee on the “DMV Zone,” Townsend expressed her gratitude for the honor. Reflecting on her journey in education, she shared her excitement at being recognized for her work with students after years of dedication. Townsend is not only D.C.’s Teacher of the Year but also a contender for the National Teacher of the Year award. Chancellor Ferebee commended Townsend for her exceptional leadership in and out of the classroom, particularly in supporting young women in Ward 8 through initiatives like publishing books with her students. Townsend’s journey in education began 16 years ago, and she currently serves as an instructional coach at Stanton Elementary. She explained that the recognition is not just for her but for all teachers who strive to make a difference in their students’ lives. The D.C. Teacher of the Year award comes with a $7,500 prize and salutes educators who show expertise in student growth, leadership, and commitment to advancing the teaching profession. Townsend’s dedication, passion, and impact on her students have made her a well-deserving recipient of this prestigious award.
