Discussions on Deputy President’s Impeachment Motion Spark Clashes in Kenya

Kenya’s Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, is facing an impeachment motion in parliament due to accusations of supporting anti-government protests and involvement in corruption. Public forums were held across the country to discuss the impeachment, leading to clashes between supporters and opponents of Gachagua. In Nairobi, violence erupted at a forum with chairs being thrown, and in Nyeri county, police clashed with the deputy president’s supporters. Some legislators who initially signed the impeachment motion have now withdrawn their support after hearing from their constituents.
The impeachment motion includes 10 grounds such as corruption and ethnic discrimination. Gachagua maintains his innocence and vows to fight the motion. The high court declined to stop public participation, setting a hearing for next Wednesday. President Ruto has remained silent on the matter, citing his stance not to publicly humiliate his deputy.
The senate is expected to hear the impeachment motion next week. The tensions surrounding the impeachment have highlighted the deep divisions within the ruling alliance and the country at large. The outcome of the impeachment process will have far-reaching implications on the political landscape of Kenya.
