Makenna Morris propels Washington to a win against Angel City

In a thrilling match on Friday night, the Washington Spirit secured a 2-1 victory over Angel City, despite being shorthanded. Makenna Morris scored the winning goal in the 78th minute by popping the ball over goalkeeper DiDi Haracic. Ashley Hatch had earlier opened the scoring for the Spirit in the 39th minute.

Despite Angel City’s attempts to equalize, Messiah Bright managed to score in the 51st minute off a cross from Alyssa Thompson. With the win, the Spirit (15-5-2) have already clinched a spot in the National Women’s Soccer League playoffs.

However, Angel City (6-12-4) suffered a setback in their bid for a playoff spot as they now trail Racing Louisville by three points with only four games remaining in the season. Key players for the Spirit, including Trinity Rodman and Casey Krueger, were sidelined due to injuries, with Rodman suffering from a back spasm and Krueger nursing an adductor injury. Despite their absence, the Spirit managed to secure a crucial victory on the road.

Ouleymata Sarr also missed the game due to a back injury, marking her third absence in a row. With the playoffs looming, the Spirit will be hoping for a full squad as they look to make a deep run in the postseason.
