President Joe Biden has called the Israeli strike that killed Hezbollah’s Hassan Nasrallah a “measure of justice” for his four-decade reign of terror. Nasrallah, one of Hezbollah’s founders, was confirmed dead in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut. Biden noted that Nasrallah’s death came in the context of the conflict that began with Hamas’ massacre of Israelis in 2023. The White House sees Nasrallah’s death as a significant blow to Hezbollah and has been trying to contain Israel’s war with Hamas, backed by Iran, from escalating into a regional conflict. The State Department has ordered the departure of U.S. diplomats’ families and authorized nonessential employees to leave Beirut due to the volatile security situation following the Israeli strike on Nasrallah. Iran’s President accused the U.S. of supporting the strike. Biden reiterated his desire for cease-fires in Gaza and between Israel and Hezbollah to bring stability to the region. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu vowed to continue operations against Hezbollah until Israeli citizens can return home. The State Department has advised American citizens to consider leaving Lebanon due to the increased volatility. An ordered departure has been authorized, requiring affected individuals to leave, while an authorized departure allows them to leave voluntarily at government expense. Biden’s administration is carefully navigating the situation to prevent further escalation and build support for cease-fires and truce efforts in the region.
